La Boqueria

In the centre of Barcelona, half way the famous Ramblas, you find one of Barcelona's oldest and most renown markets: El Mercat de Sant Josep, also known as La Boquería. The market has its origins in the 12th Century when it was a place where meat and other products were sold. Back then the Rambla was the most posh area of Barcelona and many people held the opinion that the market didn't belong there, so they tried to close the market. Since then the market has changed places many times until 1814, when it officially came back at its original location at the Ramblas. Nowadays it's a local tourist attraction, you can't come to Barcelona and not visit this market. Today you find all that's possible eatable at the market, from exotic fruits to delicious fresh fish of all sorts. The Boqueria is opened every day, except Sunday. If you really want to enjoy traditional Barcelona we suggest to try out some of the small tapas bars and restaurants on and around the Boqueria market.
