National Museum of Catalan Art (MNAC)

The Museo Nacional de Arte de Catalunya is located in the beautiful Palau de Montjuic that was built in 1929 for the world exhibition. The museum covers extensive collections of Romanesque works to Modern art in different forms. Not only are there works of Catalan artists being exposed here, you can also find works on which Catalonian people, landscapes or scenes are being depicted, or works from international artists that are connected with Catalonia some way or another.

Picasso Museum

Most works in the Picasso Museum of Barcelona are from the younger years of the painter. The museum holds an extensive part of the sketches from his learning era. Besides that, many of the works in this museum are related to the part of his life that Pablo Picasso spent in Barcelona. The museum is located in five "palaces" from the 13th to 15th century, in carrer Montcada, one of the many historical narrow streets of the neighbourhood El Borne.

CCCB (centre of contemporary culture)

A wide range of cultural activities like exhibitions, presentations, films, courses, festivals and concerts are being organized here. Not only is this a place of exhibition, there are also many works being produced. Music, debate, multi media and the encouragement of the use of new technologies and foreign languages are key in Barcelona's contemporary cultural centre.

MACBA (museum of contemporary art)

The regular collection of the MACBA includes contemporary art from the fifties onwards. Not only the collections are impressive, but also the building itself designed by the american architect Richard Meier is a real show case of modern architecture. MACBA organizes interactive activities for its visitors throughout the whole year.

Caixa Forum

Caixa Forum is situated in a modernist textile factory with a modern interior. It's more than just a museum, it's a socio-cultural centre where seeing, discovering, feeling, understanding and experiencing art is what it's all about. The very extensive and varying collection of Caixa Forum includes art from different cultures and eras, photography, theatre, architecture, design, multi media, music and dance. This is a museum where the whole family can enjoy and experience art and culture all together.

Fundació Joan Miró

This museum of the Catalan artist Joan Miró is located on the hill Montjuic in a green and calm area. Next to the extraordinary building in which an important part of all Miró's work can be seen, there is a nice garden of sculptures. In both the garden as in the museum there are works from many of Miró's friends and contemporaries besides his own works.

Cosmo Caixa

The science museum of Barcelona is one big playground for young and old. You can experience various scientific facts first hand. Important theories like the relativity theory and the theory of gravitation are being explained in a very practical and interacive manner. The beginning of the universe and a detailed model of our solar system are being portrayed very lifelike in the big 3D planetarium. The museum also houses a unique reconstruction of a tropical rain forest where biological processes can be observed. This is an excellent museum for the whole family to pass an enjoyable and instructive afternoon.

Muesum of the history of the city, Plaza del Rey

At Plaza del Rey, one of the most historical places of the city you will find the core of the museum of the history of Barcelona. The medieval royal palace, the Santa Agata chapel and the gothic city hall are some historical treasures already, but inside the basements of the museum there's even more to see. The foundations of the Roman settlement Barcino are still in tact and underneath the museum you can walk along them to experience Barcelona's history first hand. In this museum at Plaza del Rey you find everything about the history of Barcelona from the 1st Century BC until the the 13th Century.

Other chapters of the history of Barcelona come to life in the Monastery-Museum Pedralbes, the house of Verdaguer, the interpretation centre of Park Güell, espacio Santa Caterina, refugio 307 and the interpretation centre of el Call.

 

Museum of the history of Catalonia

The Palau de Mar is one of the last remaining historical buildings in the old harbour of Barcelona. In what used to be the seafarers' warehouses you can now find all information and details about the history of the autonomous region Catalonia. The story of Catalonia from the prehistory until today is being expressed through maps, historical tools, documents, attractive sceneries, paintings, pictures and video material.

Maritime Museum

Barcelona has always played an important role in the history of the maritime world. In the royal wharf of Barcelona you will find the maritime museum where you can study the history of Catalonia's and Spain's seafarers by observing the paintings, sea maps, nautical instruments and ship models both on scale and in real life size. Inside the museum there is a lifelike replica of the royal galley of Don Juan of Austria, and near the museum in the old harbour of Barcelona you can find the schooner Santa Eulalia from 1918.
