Typical barcelona

La Rambla

Of course you can't leave Barcelona without having visited the city's famous Ramblas. The Rambla is a wide street with traffic on both sides and in the middle a wide pedestrian boulevard. If you walk into the Ramblas starting at the Columbus statue you first pass some artesan and souvenir stands, then painters who capture your best aspects in great charicatures, and then the renown living statues. A bit further up the Rambla in the direction of the central square 'Plaça Catalunya' there are stands where you can buy flowers and animals. But first you pass the beautiful traditional market La Boqueria.

Passed Plaça Catalunya the Rambla gets a bit less crowded. From there you find some nice terraces, fun shops and various tapas restaurants.

The Columbus Monument

At the beginning of the Rambla in the historical harbour of Barcelona, high in the sky on his pilar is standing the statue of Cristopher Columbus. The monument was built in 1888. At the foot of the pilar there's a beautiful relief that pictures the story of the discovery of America. Inside the pilar an elevator takes you up to the ball under Columbus' feet from where you can enjoy a great view over Barcelona.
